MINI ROOMBOXES AND SCENES

Working with dollhouse scale (one inch to one foot)is a lot of fun and is very different from the two inch to one foot scale I use for the Barbie scenes. Here is a roombox of a bakery scene. When I made this one, I was able to use all the cute little miniatures I have made. My thanks also to Sue Giordano who contributed ideas and some of the minis. The cases were made by me out of small pieces of wood and plexiglass cut to size. The larger case has pies, cakes, pastries and caramel apples in it. The smaller case has assorted bagels, cakes, crescents and cookies. The bread case has folded boxes on the bottom shelf, Italian breads on the second shelf, loaves of different breads on the top shelf and a basket with more breads hanging on the hooks. On top of the cases and the connecting table are a gingerbread house, more cakes, a three tiered pastry tray, cash register, box of brownies, a wedding cake and more cakes and pastries. I won first prize for this roombox in a contest held by Rainy Day Miniatures.

This is a roombox of a toyroom. I purchased the larger doll in it from a dollmaker. Some of the mini toys were made by my friends including the little blue doll with curls and Erin beanie, made by Shelly. The other minis were made by me or purchased at shows.

Here is one of my favorite roomboxes which is a kitchen. It resembles my own kitchen in many ways. The cabinets and appliances were assembled by me and my husband. The refrigerator was electrified by my husband. The first picture is of the whole kitchen roombox. The cabinets all open up and many of them have foods-cereal boxes, canned goods, cookies or pots inside. The counter is filled with cannisters, foods in preparation like the brownies being cut up, potato chips poured into a bowl etc. There are mini tins on top of the cabinets. Inside the refrigerator are prepared platters and cakes. The center island is filled with platters of food ranging from sandwiches to hot dogs and hamburgers to veggie plates. The table has lots of desserts ranging from cakes, cookies, donuts and pies. The two shelves have recipe books on the bottom and tiny "frozen moment moving foods" on the top.

This roombox is a den or living room. My husband and I made the box and used a frame to glass it in. It has lots of little minis like the cute pitcher and glasses of milk, sandwiches and jellybeans in a jar on the coffee table. The desk has lots of minis like checkbook, pencils, pad and all the nautical items on top. The ceiling light was made from sculpey and painted. The fireplace has lots of family pictures besides the clock on the mantle.

This roombox is a nursery. This is another box with a frame but I took pictures without the frame. I used a lot of contributions from a Nursery Swap done through one of my miniature email clubs. Look carefully to see all the cute little accessories. I made the closet out of a chest. The ceiling light was made from sculpey including the little dinosaurs. The little baby in the crib is Krissy whose clothes and accessories are from an email friend Angie.

This is an American Girl Mini Room. It is the blue room and I have added little touches such as the posters, a Kelly doll and CDs on the floor.

This roombox is a 70's room. The box is from the Our Generation boxes which resemble the American Girl ones only they are much cheaper. Kelly is dressed as a little hippie with her tiedyed shirt, jeans and headband. There are a lot of little accessories here like the chia pet on the three tiered shelf, the candles, records lying out with their jackets, the little dog and his house. The blanket and one of the pillows were made for me by an email friend Janet. Notice all the timely posters on the walls. Remember those?

This roombox is a present I just finished for my mother. She is an artist and it is a miniature copy of her art studio in her home. The art in the scene are my mother's paintings miniaturized. The light is made from wire and a Christmas bell ornament. The desk paints are from aluminum foil rolls and the pencils are from tiny dowels. The sofa is made from wool fabric and styrofoam.

This is a present I made for my youngest daughter Kelli. She lives in California and I wanted her to have a roombox of her room back home in Rhode Island. She is a film major so I added the action board. The dresser and bed look just like her room with her same comforter. The doggie is Sarah, our bichon. The lamp is a mini of the actual carved fisherman one she has.

This is my first quarter scale scene. It is an ocean in a little rubber ducky. The kayakers I found at a train show. The mountains are pieces of styrofoam painted with bits of grass attached. Look carefully to see the man on the rocks watching the boats.

Here is another rubber ducky scene only this duck, instead of being about 7 inches long, is 12 inches long. All the items in this "roombox" are from the beach swap of the Miniature Collectors Club. Look carefully to find everything including beach pails(Gale and Kim); a little boat and ring toss(Barbara); the beach umbrella(Rusty); beach chair(Linda); beach bag and towel(Marlene); water bottle and book(Tina); hibachi grill(Pauline) with steaks(Dianne)and marshmallows(Margaret); roasting utensils(Leanne);fishing pole(Eva); volleyball and net(Jeanne); beach ball(Patricia); hot dogs on plate(Cher); sandcastle(Terri); flip flops and visor(Gilda) life preserver(Susan) and suntan lotion(mine). There were many more items in the swap but I didn't have room to add them all in. The first four pics are of the beach scene and the last pic shows the two duckies together.

Here is yet another roombox which I have been gathering items for all year. It is an attic roombox. I made it in a 10 gallon aquarium since I had so many things to put in it. Some of the items are from swaps from email clubs and others are printables and still others I made with sculpey or other materials. The walls are made from cardboard and pieces of wood to resemble the 2x4s. There are two lights with pull chains in the ceiling. The left side includes a hassock with a box of records on top of it, a set of suitcases and a piece of furniture with odds and ends including plates stacked on it. In the middle of the attic is a barrel chest with hats, dolls and a veil. THere is a mannequin modeling a victorian wedding dress and hat. There are blankets stacked up on the floor and there is a dresser with a blanket stuffed in a drawer. To the right side is a sewing machine with fabric, some of which has a pattern pinned to it and cut out and a box of patterns. Next to the machine is a basket of yarn. There are more boxes including one with garage sale signs and some rugs stacked up. There is a broken rocker wtih a Christmas Tree box resting on it. A bag of Christmas wrapping papers stands nearby as does a worn leather jacket. Some of the pictures were taken without the walls up, to make them clearer.

This is one of my favorite roombox scenes and it is an Ice Cream Shoppe. The top of the roombox is decorated to look like a table serving ice cream sundaes and banana splits. It was fun working in realistic size after working in such tiny sizes. There is a picture of the whole roombox and then a closeup of the top. Then there is a picture of the left side with another pic of the ice cream containers. There are 8 different ice cream flavors. On the table and counter, people are being served sundaes, malteds and sodas. Next is a picture of the right side with a closeup of the case and counter. The case has different size malted cups, jars with everything from sprinkles to berries to chips in them to different menus.

Here is another roombox and it is a little girl's bedroom arranged in a toy box with normal sized toys on the top. My husband built the major portion of the toybox with my help as an assistant. You can see the painted bears on the sides of the toybox. The inside scene lights up by a switch concealed by the toys on top. The first picture is of the entire toybox with the bedroom scene inside. The next one is of the bear painting on the side of the toybox. Next is the inside bedroom in its entirety and then the left side. After that you can see a closeup of a lovely doll, Hannah, I bought from doll artist Rose Coddaire. This picture is followed by a closeup of the bears tea party and you can see the beautiful 1:144 scale house my husband built for me, which is Hannah's dollhouse. There is also a closeup of the sweet little dollhouse and lastly a closeup of the right side of the bedroom. There are tons of little toys to look at;don't miss all the dolls in the bookcase, the hamsters in their cage, the stickers on Hannah's bed, her jewelry case, all her boots and shoes tucked in her little cabinet, the scene I painted as a backdrop on her wall(a lake, a rainbow and a pot of gold). I painted all the furniture and made the little chairs the bears are sitting on. It is difficult to see but above the hamster cage is a painting my grandfather painted of a little girl looking at a castle; I had that picture in my room growing up as did my children. Some of the contributors to this scene include Sherry for her sweet present of the "I Love Acting" mat, Wilga for the cute blue shoes, Bonnie for her adorable tiny dolls, Rose, already mentioned, for the large doll Hannah and Mishelly for the stickers and of course my sweet wonderful husband Bob for all his help and for the dollhouse he made.

This is another roombox I have made out of the toy box. I took all the little girl furniture and accessories out of it because they will go into my dream dollhouse when it is ready. Instead I have made a toy shoppe inside the toy box, called the FunTime Toy Shoppe. I have included lots and lots of pictures so you can see all the details. The first picture is of the entire toy shoppe with the real size toys on top. Then there is a pic of the toy shoppe in full. Notice the check out counter is a dinosaur. The boy paying for the items on the counter has several dollars in his right hand...I don't know if it is clear enough to see in the pics. The third picture is of the left wall. You can see the cashier ringing up the boy's purchases (some books, a puzzle and an etch-a-sketch). On the wall behind her are hanging pretty bags, colored pencils in baggies and different colored pads. On the top shelf are all types of books. There is a cabinet in the back which has some smaller toys. The back wall has a mural of a scene with a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. The boy has a backpack on, hopefully to help him carry his purchases. The fourth pic is of the back wall and shows lots of dolls of all different kinds. All were made by hand by me or a few others including Bonnie Justice, with the exception of a few plastic ones at the end of the shelf. The next pic is of the two display tables, made from games, on the floor next to the boy. The CANDY LAND table has Barbie and other doll boxes stacked up, some furniture and tiny Dawn clothes. There are a few Barbie booklets. The SORRY table has baby toys including a xylophone, stacking donuts, a jack-in-the-box, activity center, pull toy, hammer and pegs and more. In the back you can see some larger dollhouses stacked on the floor. The sixth picture is of the middle shelf which includes lots of stuffed animals on the top and stacked puzzles and games on the bottom shelf. On the other side of the shelf are more puzzles, dolls and games. The last two pics are of the right wall and you can see the other side of the middle shelf and the bicycles and peddle cars stacked against the wall. The top shelf on the right wall has doll boxes stacked on it and the lower shelf has farm animal toys, soldiers of all different kinds and small cars. I had a lot of fun making this roombox.

Here is a present I made for my mother for Mother's Day. This roombox was made in a distressed container to be hung on a wall. It is a copy of her porch but I took some artistic liberties and rearranged the furniture a little. I copied all of her items on the wall and tried to make everything as close as possible. The scene outside is a picture of her actual backyard.
